Problem Framing is how senior leaders decide which strategic problem is worth solving — before a roadmap, a transformation, or a major investment gets committed. Four structured phases take a room of six to eight senior decision-makers from a handful of competing priorities to one problem statement everyone has signed off on.
The full facilitation manual: the method, the rationale behind every exercise, and notes on what breaks down and how to handle it. Written by John and Dana Vețan from running this process with senior leadership teams since 2018.

I've never run a Problem Framing workshop. Can I use this?
Yes — if you already facilitate structured workshops. The playbook gives you the rationale behind every activity, the slides give you the instructions, and the agendas keep you on time. What you need is facilitation experience. The methodology is provided.
Who can run this Problem Framing workshop?
Workshop facilitators, agile coaches, strategy consultants, and product managers or designers with a strategic bent — anyone who runs structured sessions for a living. They're not the decision-maker, the researcher, or the subject-matter expert; their job is to prepare the room, keep the group moving through the process, and get to a problem statement everyone can sign off on. What matters is facilitation experience, not job title. The kit is for this person.
Is this the same as AI Problem Framing?
No. Problem Framing and AI Problem Framing are both one-day workshops, but they're built for different rooms. Problem Framing is for senior leaders deciding which strategic problem deserves attention — before AI, or anything else, is on the table. AI Problem Framing is for a cross-functional team deciding which AI use cases are worth building, once an AI mandate already exists. If your leadership team is still arguing about direction, this kit is the right one. If direction is set and you're choosing between AI use cases, you want AI Problem Framing instead.
I’m a consultant. Can I use this to run paid workshops for my clients?
Yes. Your purchase includes a Commercial Facilitation License. This means you are fully authorized to use these materials (slides, agendas, worksheets) to deliver high-value, paid workshops to your own clients. You can charge for the session, you just cannot resell or distribute the digital files themselves.
